Waiākea Digital Media
Waiākea Digital Media (WDM) is a group of students interested in pursuing additional training, skill development, broadcast experience and travel opportunities.
In 2012, WDM took its first group of students to Student Television Networkʻs (STN) National Convention in Dallas, Texas. Over 1,900 students from across the nation converged at the Hyatt Regency-Dallas for STN's annual meeting. While at the convention, students were provided opportunities to meet with industry professionals.
WDM traveled to Los Angeles for the 2013 STN Convention at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel. The group spent time in Anaheim, visiting the parks, Angels Stadium, and met with ESPN Sport Center's Neil Everett at the Grammy Museum. Jayna Jobes received honorable mention for High School Anchoring, and Waiakea Intermediate's Kody LaGuire placed 3rd in Middle School Anchoring.
STN took our group to Orlando for its 2014 Convention. Again, WDM spent time at local area parks before heading to the Rosen Plaza Hotel and Convention Center on International Drive for the convention. This group was unique, as we had some "guest" members from Waiakea Intermediate and Kamehameha Schools-Keaau traveling with us. WDM received its first trophy winner! Kacie LaGuire, Ty Yamamoto and KSKeaau's Anyssa Iwamoto placed 3rd in Short Story. This was also the first year that we participated in the Sweet 16 Contest, entering the TV Sitcom Pilot contest. The students had 16 hours to conceive, write, film, edit, export and turn in a 5 minute pilot for a fictitious TV show. This was probably the highlight of the trip, as these very different and unique individuals had to pull together and work as a team to complete the project.
